The Resurrection of Jesus — Evidence and Meaning

“That he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:4 (ESV)

If the resurrection of Jesus did not happen, Christianity falls apart.

The apostle Paul wrote:

“And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:14 ESV)

Christianity is unique among the world’s religions because it is built upon a historical claim: Jesus of Nazareth physically rose from the dead. The resurrection is not merely a symbol of hope or a metaphor for new beginnings. Scripture presents it as a real event that took place in history.

But what evidence supports that claim, and why does it matter today?

The Empty Tomb

All four Gospels record that Jesus’s tomb was found empty on the third day.

“He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.” (Matthew 28:6 ESV)

Even Jesus’s opponents never produced a body. Instead, they attempted to explain away the empty tomb by claiming the disciples had stolen it.

“Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’” (Matthew 28:13 ESV)

Ironically, this explanation acknowledged an important fact: the tomb was empty.

The burial site was publicly known. Jesus had been executed publicly. If His body remained in the grave, Christianity would have ended before it began.

Eyewitness Testimony

The New Testament repeatedly points to eyewitnesses.

Paul wrote:

“Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 15:6 ESV)

In other words, Paul invited investigation. Many eyewitnesses were still living when he wrote these words.

Jesus appeared to:

  • Mary Magdalene (John 20:11–18)
  • The disciples (John 20:19–23)
  • Thomas (John 20:24–29)
  • Two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35)
  • More than five hundred believers at once (1 Corinthians 15:6)

These appearances were not isolated visions. They involved conversations, meals, and physical interaction.

The Transformation of the Disciples

Before the resurrection, the disciples were afraid.

Peter denied Jesus.

Most of them scattered.

After the resurrection, these same men boldly proclaimed Christ despite persecution, imprisonment, and death.

What changed?

They believed they had encountered the risen Jesus.

People may suffer for something they mistakenly believe to be true. But people do not willingly endure persecution for something they know they invented.

Their transformation provides powerful evidence that something extraordinary happened.

Why the Resurrection Matters

The resurrection is not simply proof that miracles are possible.

It confirms who Jesus claimed to be.

“And was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead.” (Romans 1:4 ESV)

The resurrection means:

  • Jesus conquered death.
  • His sacrifice for sin was accepted.
  • God’s promises can be trusted.
  • Eternal life is available to believers.

Without the resurrection, the cross would be a tragedy.

Because of the resurrection, the cross becomes victory.

Hope for Believers

The resurrection also changes how Christians view their own future.

Jesus said:

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25 ESV)

Death is not the end for those who belong to Christ.

Because He lives, believers have confidence that they too will be raised.

This hope sustains Christians through grief, suffering, and uncertainty.

The empty tomb reminds us that the darkest chapters are not the final word.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Why is the resurrection essential to the Christian faith?
  2. Which piece of evidence strengthens your confidence most?
  3. How does the promise of resurrection shape the way you face fear and suffering?
  4. In what ways should the reality of the risen Christ affect your daily life?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You that Jesus did not remain in the grave. Thank You for the hope, forgiveness, and victory made possible through His resurrection. Strengthen my faith and help me live each day in the confidence that Christ is alive and Your promises are true. Amen.
