What Does “Born Again” Mean?
Introduction
Few phrases are more recognized in Christianity than “born again.” Yet many people misunderstand what Jesus meant when He used those words in John 3. Some think being born again means becoming more religious. Others think it refers to an emotional experience or moral improvement. But Jesus described something far deeper — a complete spiritual rebirth.
In John 3, Jesus speaks with a Pharisee named Nicodemus. Nicodemus was educated, respected, and deeply religious. Yet Jesus tells him that none of those things are enough to enter the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus Comes at Night
John 3:1–2 says:
“Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night…” (ESV)
Nicodemus was not an atheist or a pagan. He was a religious leader. He studied Scripture and obeyed religious laws. Yet something inside him knew he was still missing something.
Many people today are like Nicodemus. They may attend church, know Bible stories, or try to live morally good lives, but they still lack spiritual life.
“You Must Be Born Again”
Jesus immediately says:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3 ESV)
The phrase “born again” literally means “born from above.” Jesus was teaching that salvation is not about external reform. It is about receiving new spiritual life from God.
Notice Jesus says “unless.” This is not optional. Spiritual rebirth is necessary for everyone.
Nicodemus is confused and asks how someone can enter their mother”s womb a second time. He is thinking physically while Jesus is speaking spiritually.
Born of Water and the Spirit
Jesus continues:
“Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5 ESV)
Many scholars connect this to Ezekiel 36:25–27 where God promised to cleanse His people with water and put His Spirit within them.
Jesus was explaining that salvation involves cleansing from sin and the giving of new spiritual life through the Holy Spirit.
This is important because Christianity is not merely behavior modification. God does not simply polish the old self. He creates something new.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
Jesus compares the Spirit to the wind:
“The wind blows where it wishes… So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8 ESV)
We cannot control the wind, yet we see its effects. The same is true spiritually. We may not fully understand how God changes a heart, but we can see the results.
A born-again believer begins to develop new desires:
- A desire for God
- Conviction over sin
- Love for Scripture
- Desire for prayer
- Love for other believers
These things do not save us, but they are evidence that spiritual life is present.
God So Loved the World
The conversation reaches its climax in John 3:16:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (ESV)
This verse explains how new birth becomes possible. Salvation is not earned through works. It comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
God loved sinners enough to send His Son to die in their place. Jesus took the punishment our sin deserved so we could receive eternal life.
Why Many Reject the Light
Jesus also explains why many people reject Him:
“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light…” (John 3:19 ESV)
Humanity naturally resists God because sin loves darkness. Becoming born again requires repentance — turning from sin and trusting Christ.
Application for Today
Being born again is not about:
- Becoming more moral
- Joining a church
- Trying harder
- Having religious knowledge
It is about receiving new spiritual life through faith in Jesus Christ.
A person who is born again will still struggle with sin, but their heart has changed. Their direction changes. Their desires begin changing. They become spiritually alive.
Questions for Reflection
- Have I trusted Christ personally or only relied on religion?
- Do I see evidence of spiritual life growing in me?
- Am I trusting Jesus alone for salvation?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for making new life possible through Jesus Christ. Open my eyes to understand the gospel clearly and help me walk daily in the new life You provide. Amen.
