Born of Water and Spirit
“Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.’” — John 3:5
One of the most confusing conversations in the Bible happens at night between Jesus and a Pharisee named Nicodemus.
Nicodemus was educated, respected, and deeply religious. Yet despite all of his knowledge, Jesus told him something shocking: being religious was not enough. If Nicodemus wanted to enter the kingdom of God, he needed to be born again.
Naturally, Nicodemus was confused.
“How can someone be born when they are old?” he asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb.”
Jesus responds with one of the most important statements in all of Scripture: no one can enter the kingdom unless they are born of water and the Spirit.
What Does “Born of Water” Mean?
Christians have debated this phrase for centuries, but most understand Jesus to be describing spiritual cleansing and renewal.
Throughout the Old Testament, water was often connected with purification. God promised through the prophet Ezekiel:
“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean… And I will put my Spirit in you.” (Ezekiel 36:25–27)
Jesus was pointing Nicodemus toward something deeper than outward religion. God was not merely asking people to behave better. He was promising to cleanse hearts and give new life through His Spirit.
Being born of water and Spirit means God washes away our sin and gives us spiritual life that we could never create ourselves.
Religion Cannot Produce New Birth
Nicodemus had spent his life studying Scripture and following religious rules, yet Jesus still told him he needed to be born again.
That truth still matters today.
Church attendance cannot save us. Good behavior cannot save us. Family history cannot save us. Even knowing facts about Jesus is not enough.
Salvation is not self-improvement. It is spiritual rebirth.
Only God can bring a spiritually dead heart to life.
The Spirit Changes Us From Within
When someone places their faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit begins a real work inside them.
That does not mean instant perfection. But it does mean new desires begin to grow. Sin begins to grieve us. God’s Word begins to matter. Prayer becomes personal. Slowly, over time, the Spirit transforms us from the inside out.
This is why Christianity is more than rules. It is relationship. The Christian life is not about pretending to be righteous — it is about being made new by God Himself.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, thank You that salvation is not something I can earn. Thank You for cleansing me and giving me new life through Your Spirit. Help me trust fully in You and walk daily in the new life You have given me. Amen.
