Doubt - it happens: but why Believer?

“I believe; help my unbelief!” — Mark 9:24 (ESV)

Doubt can feel frightening to a Christian. We may assume that questions mean our faith is failing or that a strong believer would never struggle with uncertainty.

Scripture tells a different story.

A desperate father once came to Jesus asking for help. His prayer was remarkably honest: “I believe; help my unbelief!” Jesus did not reject him for admitting the struggle.

Bring Your Doubt to God

Doubt becomes dangerous when it drives us away from God. But questions brought honestly to Him can become places where faith grows deeper.

Thomas doubted the resurrection. John the Baptist questioned while imprisoned. The Psalms contain believers asking God difficult questions. Scripture does not hide these moments.

When doubt comes, return to what God has already revealed. Read His Word. Remember His faithfulness. Pray honestly. Talk with mature believers who can walk beside you.

Faith is not pretending that you never have questions. Faith is choosing where you will take those questions.

Your confidence ultimately rests not in the strength of your feelings but in the character of Christ. He remains faithful on days when your faith feels strong and on days when you whisper, “Help my unbelief.”

A Prayer for Today

Lord, You know every question and uncertainty in my heart. When doubt comes, keep me from running away from You. Lead me into Your Word, strengthen what is weak in me, and help me trust Your character even when I do not understand everything. Amen.
