When someone we love dies after a long, or short, illness, the end of their suffering can bring relief, but it does not make their absence easy. We may know what we believe and still ache for one more conversation, one more ordinary day together.
Jesus understands grief. At the tomb of His friend Lazarus, Jesus wept. He did not treat sorrow as a failure of faith or hurry the mourners past their pain. Then He spoke these words: “I am the resurrection and the life.” Our hope is not that death is harmless. Our hope is that Jesus has entered death and overcome it.
For those who belong to Christ, death does not get the final word. An illness can exhaust the body, and death can separate us from someone we love for now, but neither can undo Christ’s victory or the life He gives. The believer who has died is safe in the hands of the Savior. This is a real victory, even as those left behind face a real loss.
A spouse who shared many memories with their loved one and the children who have loved their father into adulthood do not need to hide their grief to honor that hope. Let them mourn at their own pace. Offer practical help, keep showing up after the first days have passed, and speak his name when they want to remember him. Love makes room for tears and for the promise of resurrection.
If you are grieving, you do not have to solve the sorrow today. Bring it honestly to Jesus. Ask someone you trust to sit with you, pray with you, or help with one simple need. The hope of resurrection does not erase the ache; it promises that death will not have the last word.

Reflect and Respond
Who is grieving a loss today? Reach out with a specific offer of care, and do not ask them to make their grief smaller. If you are the one who is grieving, tell God what you miss and ask Him to hold you through this day.
A Prayer for Today
Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life. Thank You for winning the victory over death and holding those who trust in You. Be near to this grieving wife and her children. Comfort them in the quiet moments, give them strength for each day, and surround them with people who will keep showing up. Make room for their tears, preserve the love and memories they carry, and give them hope in Your promise of life. Amen.
