The Healing of the Ten Lepers

“Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.” — Luke 17:15 (ESV)

Ten men cried out to Jesus for mercy. All ten were suffering. All ten were told to go show themselves to the priests. And as they went, all ten were cleansed.

But only one returned.

Jesus Saw Every One of Them

Leprosy did more than damage the body. It separated people from ordinary community life. These men knew what it meant to be avoided and excluded.

Jesus did not overlook them.

Their story reminds us that no suffering person becomes invisible to God. Jesus cared for people others kept at a distance.

But the story also asks us to consider our response to God’s goodness.

Nine received the gift and continued on their way. One turned back, praised God, and thanked Jesus.

How often do we pray urgently when we need something and then quickly move on when the answer comes?

Gratitude slows us down long enough to recognize the Giver behind the gift.

The returning man was also a Samaritan — the person Jesus’s Jewish audience might least expect to become the example of faith and gratitude. God’s mercy is not restricted to the people we expect.

Jesus sees the outsider, hears the desperate, and welcomes the thankful.

A Prayer for Today

Jesus, thank You for seeing people who feel forgotten and for showing mercy without favoritism. Give me a grateful heart that remembers to return and thank You. Help me notice Your goodness instead of taking Your gifts for granted. Amen.
