Jesus Walks on Water — More Than a Miracle

“But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.’” — Matthew 14:27 (ESV)

Most people remember this story because Jesus walked on water.

And rightly so.

It was an incredible miracle that demonstrated His power over creation.

But if we stop there, we miss the deeper message.

The disciples were not relaxing on a calm lake when Jesus appeared. They were struggling against strong winds and rough waves in the middle of the night.

What makes this story remarkable is that the storm came while they were obeying Jesus.

Sometimes we assume that following God should make life easier. Yet the disciples found themselves in difficulty precisely because they were doing what Jesus told them to do.

Then, in the middle of the storm, Jesus came to them.

Not after the storm ended.

Not once the waves settled.

Right in the middle of it.

When the disciples saw Him, they were terrified.

But Jesus immediately reassured them:

“Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27 ESV)

Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking toward Jesus. For a moment, he experienced the impossible. But when he shifted his focus from Christ to the wind and waves around him, fear took over and he began to sink.

How often do we do the same?

When we focus entirely on our problems, our fears grow larger. When we focus on Christ, our faith grows stronger.

The good news is that when Peter cried out, “Lord, save me,” Jesus immediately reached out His hand.

That is the heart of this story.

Not that Peter walked on water.

Not even that Jesus walked on water.

The heart of the story is that Jesus is trustworthy in every storm and ready to help those who call upon Him.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, when the storms of life feel overwhelming, help me keep my eyes fixed on You. Strengthen my faith when fear rises and remind me that You are always present, even in the middle of difficult circumstances. Thank You for being a faithful Savior who reaches out when I call. Amen.
