What Does the Parable Of The Lost Sheep Teach Us?
“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine?” — Luke 15:4 (ESV)
Why would a shepherd leave ninety-nine sheep to search for one?
Jesus told this parable because religious leaders were criticizing Him for welcoming sinners. His answer reveals something beautiful about God’s heart: people are not disposable to Him.
The One Matters
A lost sheep cannot simply reason its way home. It needs to be found.
That is a picture of grace. Jesus came seeking people who could not rescue themselves. He did not wait for sinners to become respectable before drawing near to them.
The parable does not teach that the ninety-nine have no value. It teaches that the missing one has not lost its value simply because it wandered.
Maybe you know someone who seems far from God. Do not decide their story is finished.
Maybe you are the one who wandered. Do not believe the lie that you have gone too far to return.
Jesus says heaven rejoices when a sinner repents. God is not reluctantly tolerating the return of the lost. He celebrates it.
This should also shape how Christians see people. If one person matters deeply to the Shepherd, that person should matter to us too.
A Prayer for Today
Jesus, thank You for seeking the lost and for never treating people as disposable. Give me Your heart for those who have wandered. If I drift from You, draw me back quickly, and help me rejoice whenever someone comes home to You. Amen.
