Raising Children in the Faith

“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house.” — Deuteronomy 6:7 (ESV)

Raising children to know Christ can feel overwhelming in a world filled with competing messages. Parents may wonder whether faith can really take root amid screens, social pressure, skepticism, and a rapidly changing culture.

Scripture’s answer begins at home.

Faith Is Taught in Ordinary Moments

Deuteronomy describes teaching God’s truth while sitting at home, walking along the way, lying down, and getting up. In other words, faith formation is not limited to church on Sunday.

Children need biblical instruction, but they also need to see what faith looks like when life is ordinary.

Let them hear you pray. Let them see you apologize when you are wrong. Talk about why you make decisions based on Scripture. Answer difficult questions honestly. Make church part of the family’s rhythm without pretending church attendance alone can produce faith.

Parents cannot force a child to believe. Salvation belongs to God, and each child eventually must respond personally to Christ.

But parents can cultivate an environment where Jesus is spoken about naturally, questions are welcomed, grace is practiced, and God’s Word is taken seriously.

Perfection is not required. Consistency matters more.

Your children do not need to see flawless Christianity. They need to see authentic Christianity — including what repentance and dependence on God look like.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, give parents wisdom to raise children who know Your truth and see genuine faith lived at home. Help us teach with patience, answer questions honestly, model repentance, and trust You with the hearts of the next generation. Amen.
