Who was the Prodigal Son and why does it matter?

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion.” — Luke 15:20 (ESV)

The story we call the Prodigal Son is really a story about a gracious father and two sons who both need him.

The younger son openly rebels. He takes his inheritance, leaves home, and wastes everything. Eventually he returns with nothing but a confession and the hope of being treated like a servant.

But his father runs to meet him.

Grace Runs Toward the Lost

Jesus shows us a picture of God’s heart toward repentant sinners. The son expected punishment and humiliation. Instead, he received compassion, restoration, and celebration.

That does not make his rebellion unimportant. It shows how astonishing grace really is.

Sometimes we identify with the younger son because we know what it is like to wander. Other times we resemble the older brother, who stayed home but became bitter when grace was extended to someone he thought did not deserve it.

In different ways, both sons reveal the human heart. We can run from God through obvious rebellion, or we can remain outwardly religious while inwardly believing we have earned His favor.

Neither posture understands grace.

The Father invites us home not because we deserve a place at His table, but because He is merciful.

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank You for Your mercy toward people who wander. Help me return quickly when I stray and keep me from resenting the grace You give to others. Teach me to live as someone who is loved, forgiven, and welcomed home. Amen.
