The Virgin Birth - Why It Matters

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel.” — Matthew 1:23 (ESV)

The virgin birth can sometimes feel like a detail we mention at Christmas and then set aside. But it tells us something essential about who Jesus is.

Matthew says Jesus’s birth fulfilled the promise of Immanuel — “God with us.”

Jesus Came From God and Entered Our Humanity

Jesus was truly human. He was born, grew, became tired, felt hunger, and experienced suffering.

Yet His conception was unlike ours. The Gospels present His birth as the work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus did not simply become God’s Son later in life. His arrival was God’s supernatural entrance into human history.

The virgin birth also reminds us that salvation begins with God, not us. Humanity could not rescue itself, so God came to us.

The child in Bethlehem was not merely a remarkable teacher who would eventually show people a better way to live. He was the promised Savior.

That is why Christmas is more than a sentimental story about a baby. It is the announcement that God kept His promise and came near.

When we wonder whether God understands human life, we look to Jesus. God did not remain distant from our pain. In Christ, He entered it.

Immanuel still means what it meant then: God with us.

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank You for sending Jesus into our world. Help me never lose the wonder of Immanuel — God with us. Strengthen my faith in Your promises and remind me that You are not distant from the struggles of human life. Amen.
