Depression Is Real And It Exists Today

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (ESV)

Depression can make life feel heavy, isolated, and dark. Christians are not immune to those experiences, and struggling emotionally is not proof that someone lacks faith.

The Bible contains deeply honest accounts of sorrow. David cried out in anguish. Elijah became overwhelmed and exhausted. Job grieved intensely. Scripture does not shame hurting people for hurting.

God Is Near in the Darkness

Psalm 34 does not say God is near only to people who feel strong. It says He is near to the brokenhearted.

Sometimes faithful Christian responses include prayer, Scripture, rest, supportive relationships, pastoral care, and appropriate professional help. Seeking help does not compete with trusting God. God often cares for us through other people.

When depression makes God feel distant, His promises remain true even when emotions cannot feel them. Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable measurements of God’s presence.

If all you can pray today is, “Lord, help me,” that is still prayer.

If all you can do is take the next faithful step, take that step.

The God who met Elijah in exhaustion and David in despair has not changed. Darkness may affect what you can see, but it does not extinguish the light of Christ.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, draw near to every broken and weary heart. When darkness makes hope difficult to see, remind me that Your presence does not depend on my feelings. Give me strength for today and courage to receive help when I need it. Amen.
