What Is the Gospel?

“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand.” — 1 Corinthians 15:1 (ESV)

The word gospel is one many people have heard, but fewer can clearly define.

Some think the gospel means trying to be a good person.

Others think it means going to church, praying more, or living morally.

But the Bible gives us a much clearer answer.

The word gospel literally means good news.

But good news only makes sense if we first understand the bad news.

The Bad News

Scripture teaches that every person has sinned.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23 ESV)

Sin separates us from God.

No amount of good works, kindness, religion, or effort can remove that separation.

Left to ourselves, we stand guilty before a holy God.

That is difficult news.

But it sets the stage for something wonderful.

The Good News

Paul gives the core of the gospel clearly:

“That Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day…” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV)

The gospel is not primarily advice.

It is news.

Jesus lived the life we could never live.

He died the death we deserved.

He rose again, defeating sin and death.

Because of Christ, forgiveness is possible.

Because of Christ, eternal life is available.

Because of Christ, no one is beyond hope.

What Does This Mean For You?

The gospel is not merely information to understand.

It is truth to respond to.

Salvation is not earned.

It is received through faith.

The invitation of the gospel remains open today.

Christ has already done what was necessary.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank You for the good news of Jesus Christ. Thank You that salvation is not something I can earn but something You freely offer through grace. Help me trust fully in Christ and live each day in the hope of the gospel. Amen.
