What is Worship? More Than Sunday Morning
“Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” — Romans 12:1 (ESV)
When we hear the word worship, we often think about music on Sunday morning. Singing is certainly worship, but Scripture gives us a much larger picture.
Worship is a life directed toward God.
Worship Does Not End With the Song
Paul tells believers to offer their bodies as living sacrifices. That means worship can happen at work, at home, in the car, while serving someone, while forgiving, and while making an ordinary decision to obey God.
We worship when we tell God He is worthy with our lips. We also worship when our choices demonstrate that He is worthy with our lives.
That means there is no “off” switch.
You do not need a sanctuary, a worship band, or a particular emotional feeling to worship. You can worship by thanking God in the middle of an ordinary morning. You can worship by choosing integrity when no one is watching. You can worship by loving someone who is difficult to love.
Sunday worship matters because believers gather together to praise God. But Sunday should fuel a life of worship that continues throughout the week.
The worship channel really is open every hour of every day.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, You are worthy of more than a song. Teach me to worship You with my words, choices, work, relationships, and priorities. Let the way I live today become an offering of gratitude for who You are. Amen.
